Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is a requirement for all Orangutan Trekking Tours guests. Here is everything you need to know to ensure you are properly covered.
Insurance is Mandatory
All guests must have valid travel insurance that covers medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and trip cancellation before joining any of our tours. We will ask for proof of insurance before departure. This protects both you and our team in the event of an emergency in a remote jungle environment.
Essential coverage
What Your Policy Should Cover
Medical Expenses
Coverage for illness and injury, including hospitalisation. We recommend a minimum of $100,000 USD in medical coverage. The nearest major hospital is in Pangkalan Bun, approximately 2 hours from the national park.
Emergency Evacuation
Coverage for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation. Tanjung Puting is a remote location, and in serious cases evacuation by air may be necessary. Ensure your policy covers at least $50,000 USD for evacuation.
Trip Cancellation
Protection against unexpected cancellations due to illness, family emergencies, or unforeseen events. This should cover the full cost of your tour and associated flights.
Baggage & Equipment
Cover for lost, stolen, or damaged belongings. If you are bringing expensive camera equipment, check that your policy provides adequate coverage for high-value items.
Things to check
Additional Considerations
- Ensure your policy covers travel to Indonesia and specifically to Borneo (Central Kalimantan).
- Check that adventure activities and jungle trekking are included, not excluded, in your policy.
- Verify that boat travel on river vessels is covered by your insurer.
- If you have pre-existing medical conditions, declare them and confirm they are covered.
- Check the excess (deductible) amounts to understand your out-of-pocket costs in a claim.
- Keep a digital copy of your policy documents accessible offline on your phone.
- Note the 24-hour emergency assistance phone number provided by your insurer.
- Purchase your insurance as soon as you book your tour to maximise cancellation coverage.

A Note on Health Precautions
Beyond insurance, we recommend consulting your doctor or a travel health clinic at least 6 to 8 weeks before your trip. They can advise on vaccinations (such as Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus), malaria prophylaxis, and any other health precautions specific to tropical jungle travel in Borneo.
Bring any prescription medications you may need for the full duration of your trip, plus a few extra days as a buffer. Pharmacies in Pangkalan Bun may not stock specialised medications.
